Early Days of Ethereum

Preserving the history and stories of the people who built Ethereum.

Jonathan James Harrison, known in early Bitcoin circles as "Johnny Bitcoin", was part of the London network around Amir Taaki that helped connect Gavin Wood to Vitalik Buterin and the earliest Ethereum discussions.

Connection to Gavin Wood

In Gavin's account, Amir introduced him to Johnny at the London squat scene in 2013. Johnny had been spending time around Barcelona with Vitalik, heard about the earliest Ethereum ideas, and later mentioned them to Gavin "down the pub having a pint together."

Johnny then sent Gavin an early version of the Ethereum white paper and made the introduction to Vitalik. Gavin credits that chain of introductions as the route by which he entered the project and began building what became the C++ client.

Role in Ethereum's Genesis

Johnny was not a formal Ethereum founder, but he played a consequential connector role. In that narrow but important sense, he was one of the social bridges between the Bitcoin hacker/squatter milieu around Amir and the people who became Ethereum's core technical founders.
