Early Days of Ethereum

Preserving the history and stories of the people who built Ethereum.

David Johnston

Mastercoin and BitAngels organizer in Ethereum's early conference orbit

David Johnston appears in the Early Days of Ethereum sources as an important counterpart in the broader "cryptocurrency 2.0" scene rather than as an Ethereum insider.

The key source is the CoinTalk BTCMiami debate, where Johnston introduced himself as executive director of BitAngels and a board director of the Mastercoin Foundation. He shared that stage with Charles Hoskinson and Dan Larimer, making him one of the principal representatives of the other major programmable-blockchain direction Ethereum was being compared against in early 2014.

Episode 14 with Anthony Di Iorio confirms that this debate was remembered inside the Ethereum camp as one of the marquee side events around Miami. The Bitcoin Expo 2014 page then places Johnston in Toronto a few months later as part of the same conference circuit through which Ethereum was building recognition.

So the repo-local picture is straightforward: David Johnston mattered because he represented one of the strongest adjacent alternatives at the moment Ethereum was entering public view.
